• Falls and associated injuries are a major public health concern for the elderly
• Each year approximately 30% of persons over the age of 65 fall
• 24% of falls result in severe soft tissue injury and fractures
• Most falls occur at home during normal daily activity, such as getting up from a chair, turning your head, or climbing stairs
Most falls are multi-factorial and may be due to:
• Reduced proprioception or awareness of movement
• Impaired vestibular/inner ear function
• Weakness
• Decreased range of motion
• Altered postural synergies
• Impaired reaction times
• Reports of dizziness or vertigo
• Improper assistive device use
